DAY SIX -- September 22, 2009
7:30 am -- We are out the door in search of a Dunkin Donuts for coffee -- they are few and far between in the South -- but we passed one on our way home last night.
9:16 am -- Captain Ed checks in with James Taylor when we return from coffee. The rudder has been taken to the machine shop and will be there a day or two -- there is no question that this is the right thing for a permanent fix.
10:16 am -- Cap and his crew are now on the road to Virginia Beach for the day -- Mary Ann is navigating using her iPhone ---
Virginia Beach is beautiful -- particularly at this time of year -- there is a three mile promenade so we get in our exercise -- Mary and I do a little shopping -- and then it’s lunch at Grille 31 on the beach at the Hilton Hotel.
We sit a while in some fabulous rocking chairs right on the promenade -- similar to our Adirondacks at the boat yard. This is the perfect place to watch all the bustling around as preparations are made for the annual Neptune Festival this coming weekend.
3:45 pm -- Back at the boat yard -- nothing new on the rudder --- it is still hopefully Wed but maybe Thurs -- I am told this is what boating is all about.
Cap and his crew decide to go to a movie -- we saw “Love Happens” with Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston. It was cute for people like us who have absolutely nothing else to do -- otherwise we suggest waiting for it to come to TV.
6:40 pm -- We decide to eat in tonight so it’s back to the Shed. After a light dinner and a quick game of “Rummikub” --- it’s off to bed. Why are we so tired at night when we have done nothing during the day?
Tomorrow we think that Jamestown will get the nod -- but are keeping our options open.
Thanks for reading ---

Pat Your blog is great! Maybe you should think about turning it into a book. What an interesting crew with "Ed" the handsome and debonair Captain meticulously dressed in his yachting attire and the accomplished golfer "Mary Ann" as the Navigator(she never loses a golfball so she should have no trouble finding Florida)and the irish humorist "Pat" as the First Mate who we all know is "really" in charge. This could be a best seller! Wishing you all calm seas and plenty of wine to help you make it through.Sounds like you are having a lot of fun.Keep me informed and good luck! Jeri(Finn) Benevides
ReplyDeleteSecond that, it seems that you are having a grate time, and we hope that the navigator is on the water soon... take care and have safe journey...

Talk about a cliffhanger. What happened on day seven...? Did you make it out of the shed?
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to read about your adventures in the Hampton Roads area, especially in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Ah, memories. I was raised there, but so many years ago that you could still drive on the beach and build bonfires at night. I vaguely recall beach blankets, sand dunes, Purple Passion (grain alcohol, possibly from the chem lab at school, mixed with purple colored punch from a can), and Pabst Blue Ribbon (the reason I don't drink beer). There was no boardwalk then, and no liquor-by-the-drink (local option was defeated; Virginia was basically dry, unless you liked beer). There were no hotels, only "cheap" motels, and a place called the Surf Rider where surfer boys and girls hung out with wannabes. It was the era of two-seaters with ragtops and no rules at the beach. Think Frankie and Annette with alcohol and you have the picture. Loving the blog!
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that quotation marks, apostrophes, and other special characters are translated by the blog's comment processor and do not appear as typed, so I will stick to plain text. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of your story. Did you get to Williamsburg?
